TBSAA Announces 2020 Scholarship Recipients

The Tau Beta Sigma Alumni Association has announced the recipients of the 2020 TBSAA National Scholarships for Graduate Studies: Debra Samuel, Life member of the Eta Delta chapter and Kat Grant, Life member of the Rho chapter. The TBSAA is proud of their accomplishments! Learn more about them below.

Debra and Kat were just two of many outstanding applicants for the TBSAA Graduate Studies Scholarships this year.  TBSAA members across the country are exemplifying the second of the Five Qualities by recognizing and developing their intellectual potential in pursuing graduate studies.  All TBSAA members who are going to pursue graduate study next year are encouraged to apply in 2021.  


Debra Samuel, Eta Delta

Debra Samuel is a Life members of the Eta Delta chapter of Tau Beta Sigma. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology. As an intrinsically motivated professional, she strives to create positive and communal work environments that emphasize teamwork and service to others. Debra is a proud alumna of Howard University and a student at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, D.C. Campus. Her thesis studies are focused on the use of Positive Organizational Psychology to mitigate burnout symptoms in the workplace. Additionally, Debra is the Workplace Experience Manager at Convene, a co-working and events organization in the hospitality industry. She plans to use her expertise to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizational business strategy. As a first generation American and the first in her immediate family to receive a Master’s Degree, Debra is proud to be making history and is looking forward to what the future holds! Congratulations Debra!


Kat Grant, Rho

Kat Grant is a Life member of the Rho chapter at Indiana University, having graduated in 2019 with their Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. During their time in Rho they served as chapter Corresponding Secretary, Parliamentarian, and President, and went on to serve as the 2019-2020 North Central District Vice President of Special Projects. Kat was a four year member of the Marching Hundred and Big Red Basketball Band clarinet sections, and continues to play clarinet in IU’s All-Campus Band. Currently, Kat is pursuing their J.D. at Indiana University Maurer School of Law, with hopes to pursue a career in civil rights litigation. When they aren’t studying or trying to catch up on sleep, Kat is the communications director for the LGBTQ+ Project at Maurer, helping to meet the unmet legal needs of LGBTQ+ Hoosiers. Congratulations Kat!


The TBSAA Scholarship for Graduate Studies was introduced in 2019 to honor members of the Alumni Association who are furthering their personal and professional development by studying in a graduate education program. The scholarship is open to TBSAA members at the standard Alumni membership level or higher.
